Is There Radon in YOUR Home?
Did you know that our province has some of the highest rates of radon in Canada?
- What is it? Radon is an invisible, odorless gas that naturally occurs when the uranium in soil, rock and water breaks down.
- Is it harmful? As it escapes from the ground and is diluted by outdoor air, the concentration is very low and is harmless But, if it enters enclosed spaces, it can be a health risk, causing lung cancer.
- How does it enter my home? The difference in air pressure in your home and the soil draws air and gases, including radon and enters where the building contacts the soil through cracks in the foundation, wood slabs and around pipes, etc. This includes well-built and new homes.
- How do I know if it’s my home? Most homes will have some Radon and many factors can impact Radon levels. The only way to know if it is at a dangerous level is to do a test. (tests kits are available from the Lung Assoc). Since most homes in Canada are well sealed to protect us from the weather, the concentration of radon can build up more easily.
- How do I fix a high level? If your home tests over the guideline (200 Bq/m3) Health Canada recommends contacting a C-NRPP certified radon professional. T he most common and effective way is by installing an active soil depressurization system.
